Anna Petrovna (1708–1728) was the elder daughter of Peter the Great and Catherine I of Russia — a princess raised to secure alliances and expand an empire.
At 17, she married Charles Frederick, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, a political match that pulled her far from Russia and into the tense politics of northern Europe. Her pregnancy in 1728 was difficult from the beginning. At just 20, Anna went into labor with her first child and gave birth to a son — the future Peter III of Russia.
She died within hours of the delivery.
Her son later married Catherine the Great, making Anna the grandmother of Paul I and the link between the Romanovs and the Holstein-Gottorp dynasty. A princess meant to unite empires… who never lived to see the legacy created through her only child. #GirlHistory #AnnaPetrovna #RomanovHistory #WomenInHistory #RussianHistory
