If you’re determined to tackle a similar project, here are a few helpful tips: Dig your trenches carefully: Aim for 7” deep and 6” wide, leveling thoroughly. Line trenches with landscape fabric to keep weeds at bay. Add crushed stone or gravel beneath the timbers to prevent rot. Let the wood dry properly (below 15% moisture) before staining and don’t forget to stain the ends! Drill ½-inch holes into timbers and anchor them firmly with 3-foot rebar stakes. Stack layers securely using structural screws. Finish with a pressure-treated top cap; mitering the corners gives it a polished look.
